A Hupango folk tune in a fast paced ¾. My favorite song off this album. This song is native to the northern Regions of Veracruz and would be considered a Son Huasteco song, which different that Mazateco, but there are different languages all spread out and sprinkled over different parts of Mexico. These musicians on this field recording would have been on opposite coasts at the time María Sabina was making her impact. But who’s to say Mixtecos and Huastecos and Otomies all never crossed paths. And anyway – anything to illuminate to American’s that Spanish isn’t the only language that exists within Mexico and other parts of South America is a victory in my book. There are roughly 60 native Amerindian languages within Mexico. Generally: 10-14% of people Identify as Indigenous decent in Mexico, while 6% actually speak these languages. For an interesting read Wikipedia “Languages of Mexico”.
lyrics
Amada Marcelina vamonos por aquí,
Que No me mando solo Colás me mandó a mi.
Amada Mercelina vamonos a dormir.
